Dear all,

On February 17, China, along with several other countries in Southeast Asia, entered a new year under the sign of the Fire Horse (火马年 Huǒmǎ Nián).

Although I grew up in a small suburb of Paris, with little exposure to the many traditions of East Asia, I have for many years now embraced the Chinese New Year as a beautiful opportunity to reflect on the characteristics of the animal associated with it, in order to strengthen certain qualities within myself and, hopefully, to work a little more on what I may be lacking.

The Horse is a physical and powerful animal that, throughout history, has stood beside humans to assist in many tasks requiring muscular strength. In Chinese culture, the Horse also embodies an inner momentum, a natural drive to move forward. In addition to being hardworking, it is courageous, intelligent, and spirited. Because of its ability to run fast and over long distances, it also symbolizes freedom and the desire to explore new horizons. Yet the Horse is also capable of moving without haste, with grace and elegance, even when everything around it is restless.

Fire, for its part, warms and illuminates. Its associated emotion is joy, and in Chinese medicine, it is connected to the heart. When well mastered, Fire can be a driving force that allows us to move forward with joy and good spirit. When left uncontrolled, however, it can lead to chaos and sterile agitation.

The Year of the Fire Horse may therefore be, for me, an opportunity to broaden my horizons a little more, and to let go just enough to lighten my heart, so that I may move forward in my projects with a free and joyful mind.

I wish you all a wonderful Year of the Fire Horse.

Warm regards,
Erwan
